This documentary tells the extraordinary story of Lale Sokolov, a young Slovak Jew deported to Auschwitz in 1942, who became the assistant to the camp's chief tattooist before taking his place — a position that afforded him certain advantages under inhumane conditions. The film follows his encounter with Gita Furman, with whom he falls in love and tries to protect through this position. After liberation, against all odds, the two lovers reunite and marry in 1945, before emigrating to Australia in 1949 to flee the Soviet bloc. The documentary draws on Lale's video testimony, recorded at the end of his life, to place this story within the persecution of Slovak Jews and the implementation of the Holocaust at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
