One of the most beautiful abbeys in Christendom spent a century and a half — until 1963 — with one of the darkest reputations in France: Fontevraud penitentiary, the harshest detention site in mainland France before and during the Second World War. Jean Genet drew on it for Miracle of the Rose. After the war, over 1,200 inmates were crammed into 400 places under appalling conditions. Between stained glass and iron bars, this documentary tells the untold story of an abbey turned penal colony — through Genet's literary journey and the 1955 escape.
2027 will mark the end of UNIFIL in Lebanon: the last French peacekeepers will leave southern Lebanon and Beirut. For fifty years, Beirut has been the stage for an endless civil war and the graveyard of 141 French soldiers, 58 of them in the attack on the Drakkar barracks on October 23, 1983. This film tells the story of that attack and its survivors, who came home carrying a war in their heads — a drama that sheds light on the present and offers keys to understanding today's Middle East.
Behind the global movement for non-violence lies a Russian author little known to the general public: Leo Tolstoy. This film tells how his last book, The Kingdom of God Is Within You, shaped the character of a young Indian lawyer who would change the world — Gandhi. At a time when Tolstoy's statues are being toppled in Ukraine and his works banned in Russia, this documentary revisits the little-known links between Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Mandela, and asks: what remains of non-violence in a world tearing itself apart once again?
On August 18, 2008, ten French soldiers were killed in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan's Uzbin Valley. "For us, and for the French army, there is a before and an after Uzbin," the survivors say today. This documentary traces the extraordinary story of the French soldiers deployed to a valley that became the symbol of a turning point for the French army — and for the recognition of post-traumatic stress disorder.
